A planned hospital visit requires more than a flight and an appointment. For some patients, an applicable visa-free entry policy can make it easier to arrange a short trip, bring a family companion and keep travel dates flexible. This does not mean every visa-free policy covers medical treatment: the intended purpose must match the official rule for the traveller’s passport. It never confirms hospital acceptance, guarantees entry or determines insurance cover.
One national entry policy, four focus cities
Shanghai, Hangzhou, Guangzhou and Chengdu do not have separate visa policies for international patients. China’s national entry rules apply to all four cities. The city changes the hospital, local transport and accommodation plan; it does not change whether a passport holder needs a visa.
When a visa-free arrangement applies, it can be helpful for a short, planned visit because the patient can focus on the hospital appointment, documents and travel logistics. Entry is still examined by border authorities, and travellers should carry information consistent with their purpose of travel.
Who may benefit from visa-free entry?
The following is a practical snapshot for China MedTrip’s priority markets, checked on July 25, 2026. Policies can change, so every traveller must verify current rules with the relevant Chinese mission before booking. Malaysia is the clearest example in this overview: its current agreement expressly lists medical treatment as an eligible visa-free purpose.

Bring documents that support the purpose of your visit
Chinese missions advise eligible visa-free travellers to carry documents such as invitation letters, air tickets and accommodation reservations that support the purpose of entry. For a planned hospital visit, practical materials may include an appointment confirmation or hospital contact information, a clear travel itinerary and accommodation details. The hospital decides its own appointment process; border authorities decide entry in accordance with applicable rules.
