Chengdu can be a practical city for a planned visit when the appropriate hospital pathway is based in Sichuan. A useful plan begins with the patient’s clinical question, current documents and travel readiness—not with an assumption about appointment availability or treatment suitability.
1. Confirm the right hospital and campus
Large institutions can have multiple campuses, departments and different registration pathways. Confirm the relevant department, campus, contact channel and arrival process directly with the hospital before finalising travel. The official English site of West China Hospital, Sichuan University identifies the institution as West China School of Medicine and West China Hospital, Sichuan University; use the hospital’s own current instructions for any specific appointment process.
2. Prepare a concise enquiry package
Before asking about a planned visit, organise a factual one-page summary, the most relevant recent reports, a current medication list and a clear statement of the question to be discussed. The receiving hospital may later ask for additional information, original files or a particular format. Do not send full records, passport copies or large imaging files through a general website form.
3. Plan accommodation and support with the hospital location in mind
Choose accommodation based on realistic travel time to the confirmed campus and the patient’s need for rest. 4. Allow time for an appointment day
- Confirm the hospital’s required identification, registration and arrival instructions.
- Keep the appointment day flexible for registration, waiting, tests or hospital-directed changes.
- Bring requested originals and a concise, dated document set.
- Arrange a companion or practical language support where this is useful.
- Ask the treating team directly about clinical instructions, travel fitness and follow-up.
5. Separate coordination from clinical care
